The Ferrari California
Another one of my favorite cars is the Ferrari California. You can probably tell by now that I am a real fan of exotic cars. True, they are expensive, but like they say, "You only live once!". Plus, you don't only have to own a Ferrari to enjoy it. You can rent it if you have the urge to splurge. The California was conceived a few years ago, as early as 2005, and then its concept car was show at the 2008 Paris Motor Show. The first models to come out of the factory for customers were 2010 models, and recently, the 2011 was also released. Actually, it has been rumored that even the 2012 models are already sold out.
A two-door hardtop convertible, the Ferrari California is a revival of the name for the 1950s version Ferrari 250 GT. With its gorgeous Pininfarina exterior design, and hours of wind-tunnel testing, the California is said to be the most aerodynamic of all Ferrari models. It is also distinctive in that it is the first Ferrari to have a V-8 front engine, a 7-speed dual clutch transmission, multi-link rear suspension, direct fuel injection, and a folding metal roof. The transmission is automatic, but for thrill seekers who prefer the joy of shifting, two paddles are mounted on the steering wheel for manual operation. Its top speed rounds out at about 193mph. The car also appeals to a lower-priced segment of the market coming in at just under $200,000US.
The four-seat interior is understandably posh, and future owners can choose from regular or heat reflective leather, red or yellow rev counter, an upper dash in nine different leather colors, the steering wheel is offered in twelve colors, choice of seat upholstery in Daytona-style or Diamond-stitched style, five different colors for seat belts, and standard or aluminum footrests. And, if you decide to order your Ferrari California with standard equipment only, you will still have a luxuriously comfortable interior. Black, full grain leather, Alcantara® or two-tone interior, black fabric roof panel, steering wheel configured with engine-start button, analogic-dial instrument panel, climate control, GPS, airbags, LED tail lights, sensor-activated windshield wipers, heated and electrically-retractable wing mirrors, all make this model of car one of the nicest rides around. Finish the design with a huge array of both pastel and metallic colors, and even the standard vehicle is hot.
The convertible feature of this newest Ferrari is worth discussing, as the mechanics of the hardtop were, and are, important from two perspectives. First, building an aerodynamic car with an open roof is a feat in itself. The fact that the top is exposed means that the circulating air from the outside is bound to cause considerable drag. But, Ferrari and Pininfarina met the challenge, and completed a design that was thought to be impossible. Second, the unique hardtop made of aluminum, that retracts in a mere fourteen seconds, was a first for any Ferrari car. The feature of the retractable hardtop means this coupe can quickly and easily metamorphose into a sleek convertible.
Make no mistake, the Ferrari California is still a serious racer, but has all the comforts of a luxury sedan.
